I was lucky enough to attend the Make 3 symposium organised by Crawford College of Art and Design in March 2016 where I heard Brian Hand, artist and lecturer, give a compelling talk about the origins of the Irish tri-colour flag. In his talk he gave some fascinating insights in the history of the Suffragettes and Emily Davidson.

I wanted to respond in some way to what i had learned and saw the call for submissions to the Clones Post Office 1916 Project (curated by Eileen Ferguson) as a perfect platform. The project calls for a response to the 1916 Irish Proclamation for Independence, this response can be in any medium but must be executed on a postcard sent to participants. I focused on the word equal in the proclamation as Hand’s lecture and historical insights highlighted some more personal battles for equality that have featured in contemporary Ireland and even in my personal and work life.
